The Dodecanese, literally "twelve islands" is a group of 12 large and 150 small Greek island in Aegean Sea, off the southwest coast of Turkey, south of the island of Samos and northeast of the island of Crete .
The Dodecanese has a rich history, and many of the smallest inhabited islands boast dozens of Byzantine churches and medieval castles. The modern prefecture of the Dodecanese, is in a subdivision on the outskirts of the southern Aegean Sea, is composed of 163 islands in total, of which 26 are inhabited. Ten of these are important from a tourist point of view, and they are:
